Christ’s Work for Us in 1 Peter

Peter’s letter is full of encouragements about what Christ has done for us and how His death, resurrection, ascension or reign, and return are the good news we live in today. We have hope in Him and we endure suffering through the grace and strength He supplies. We also hope and wait with the knowledge of all that awaits us when we meet Christ, either at His return or upon our death. Here are some of the effects, results, or implications of Christ’s death, resurrection, reign, and our reunion with Him.

Christ’s death:

  • Makes us clean through the blood of the covenant (1:2)
    • Ransomed us from the foolish and futile ways of our past (1:18-19)
    • Leaves us an example of suffering without responding in sin (2:21-23; 4:1)
    • Paid for our sins and set us free so we can walk in righteousness (2:24)
    • Brings the straying sheep back to our Good Shepherd (2:25)
    • Brings us to God (3:18)
    • Precede and lead to glory (5:1, 10; 1:11; 4:13)
    • Models entrusting yourself—and your suffering—to God and following His will (4:1, 19; 2:23)

Christ’s resurrection and reign:

  • Grants us new birth or new life, as well as a living hope (1:3)
    • Gives us an eternal, imperishable, undefiled, unfading inheritance (1:3-4)
    • Completes Christ’s sacrifice and assures us our faith and hope are in God (1:20-21)
    • Lead us through judgment and the waters of death into new life with Christ (3:21)
    • Proves and enacts Christ’s victory and authority over all earthly and spiritual powers (3:21-22)

Christ’s return—some references could also immediately refer to our death:

In 1 Peter, the end is coming and our reunion with Jesus is near, which could happen when we die or when he returns. Some references might have in mind mainly our death or Christ’s return, but often the two relate as Peter refers to the glorious future awaiting us when we meet Jesus.

  • Will bring complete salvation and we will receive our inheritance (1:5)
    • Our proven, persevering faith will result in praise and honor to Christ (1:7)
    • The completion of our hope will result in God’s grace poured out on us (1:13)
    • Will reveal the glory of Christ—and the glory we share with Him (4:13)
    • Includes us receiving an unfading crown of glory (5:4)
    • Will grant us the eternal glory He has safely brought us to as He restored, confirmed, strengthened, and established us (5:10; 1:5)
